Nacho López: Mexican Photographer (John Mraz) Review

In a review of John Mraz’s monograph Nacho López: Mexican Photographer (University of Minnesota Press, 2003), Tejada highlights the Mexican photographer’s unique contribution to modern photography by reinterpreting photojournalism in a series of reportajes or photo-essays. López revealed the underside of Mexico’s so-called “miraculous” modernization, even as he pointed to blind spots in the visual discourse around national identity. He refuted establishment images of Mexican reality in the media and motion picture industries by rendering social polarizations caught between middle class pathology and the culture’s idealization of the working class.
